Board Vacancies at Ffotogallery

In the summer of 2019, Ffotogallery will complete a move to a new home in Cathays, Cardiff. Our ambition is to create a dynamic new focal point for photographers, artists and all those with an interest in and passion for photography. The new space will open to the public in the Autumn.

As we enter an exciting and transformational period in our history, we wish to appoint four new trustees to join our Board. We are looking for individuals who can help us shape and deliver a new, long-term strategic vision for the organisation.

Since its formation in 1978, Ffotogallery has been at the forefront of new developments in photography and lens-based media in Wales and beyond, encouraging public understanding of and deeper engagement with photography and its value to society. The scope of our current activities are broad, and include;

• Exhibitions, print and online publishing activities and projects that reflect the evolution of the photographic medium and its role in the world
• Commissioning and exhibiting the work of new and established artists and cross-disciplinary practice that responds to the evolving nature of the medium
• Establishing and running the biennial Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography (www.diffusionfestival.org)
• Developing learning resources, organising talks and events, courses and workshops to support practice, knowledge exchange and appreciation
• Providing a creative studio and digital workspace for creative practitioners, collaborating groups and visiting international artists
• Preserving existing and producing new archival materials and establishing a new library to make them publicly accessible
• Internships, volunteering and skills development opportunities across the range of the organisation's work

The company is run by a small team, headed by Director, David Drake. We work regularly with photographers, artists and creative practitioners as well as with a broad range of partner organisations to deliver the full range of our work. Board members play an important role in ensuring good governance for the organisation, as well as being ambassadors for the work of the organisation and for photography in Wales. While we would be interested in individuals with skills and experience in Photography, Visual Arts, Finance, Fundraising, Legal, Marketing and Education, we welcome applications from all - regardless of age, background or experience. For those first-time trustees, we will also provide opportunities for training in the roles and responsibilities of a trustee.

Ffotogallery also wants to build a diverse Board of Trustees that reflects the communities in which it works. Diversity can encompass a wide variety of characteristics including age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, religion, nationality, experience and skills. We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and would particularly encourage nominations from young, disabled or Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates.

We are looking for committed individuals who will be able to contribute to the long term success of Ffotogallery. Board members will be required to attend up to four board meetings per year and an annual Away Day, as well as attend various exhibition openings, events and festivals. You will also be asked to spread the word amongst your own networks, to help ensure that our work reaches as far and wide as possible.

Our current Trustees

Mathew Talfan (Chair)

Mathew is a brand & communications consultant with a background in the creative and cultural industries that covers broadcasting, advertising, design, visual and performing arts and higher education. He is a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and was also co-founder of Photomarthon UK, the annual photographic event which took place in Cardiff between 2004 and 2015.

Alicia Miller

Alicia has worked for more than 20 years in the contemporary visual arts, as Associate Director at San Francisco Camerawork, Head of Education and Public Events at the Whitechapel Gallery, London and the Axisweb Associate in Wales, among other positions.

David Massey

David is a Digital Producer and Curator for Welsh National Opera, whose remit is to produce digital installations that capture compelling, creative and innovative stories for the promotion and celebration of classical theatre and music. Before joining WNO, David worked at the BBC in online broadcast and production.

Jack Arthur

Jack is a business developer for price comparison website Confused.com. He has over 3 years’ experience in Fintech and Financial Services and has worked in both the UK and France. Jack is also a Business Advisor and part of the creative network at Arts & Business Cymru.

Philippa Haughton

Philippa is a social researcher currently working at the Office of National Statistics. She is a historian of modern Britain with broad research interests.

Mike Bryan

Mike spent 30 years working for ITV Wales in various broadcast and technology management roles. Officially retired, he continues carries out some freelance broadcasting work on a part-time basis. He is also a Board Member at RCTCAB (Rhondda Cynon Taf Citizens Advice Bureau) and Too Good to Waste in Ynyshir.

Hugh Thomas

Hugh is the founder of My Future My Choice and is the creator of multidisciplinary educational programmes that boost confidence and inspire young people to think about their future. He has led education initiatives for local and national government, run an arts company and public arts events, worked in secondary schools and has established community projects and charities. He is also the Director of Education activities for The Bristol Initiative Trust which aims to help ‘generate learners with attitude’.
